WHY DO WE NEED skin care regimen?

Well, for more than 1 reason. Let’s talk of facial skin first. Our face is our identity. We all desire bright, clear and glowing skin.

However, our skin is regularly tortured by external factors – exposure to pollution, UV light, known and unknown products, causing uneven and patchy pigmentation, redness, coarse texture, dull and lifeless skin and premature ageing. These changes occur due to oxidative damage and inflammation, thus impairing the cell DNA, disrupting collagen and lipid molecules. It disturbs the skin barrier and protective microbiomes.

Intrinsic factors like hormonal changes, biological ageing, changes in skin renewal cycle, health parameters (e.g obesity) often lead to acne, melasma, wrinkles, skin sagging etc. While it may not be possible to keep the intrinsic factors at bay, we can, however, defy the effects.

What is a skin care regimen?

Basic skin care regimen should include products that follow the principle – Clean, Treat, Protect. Clean – appropriate cleanser, soaps, etc that help to clean the face. Treat – products recommended resolving skin concern like acne, pigmentation etc Protect – products like sunscreen, skin barrier repair creams, moisturizers form this group. Day time skin care regimen must focus on protecting your skin, using products that shield your skin from harmful UV rays and pollution.

Night time skin care routine should be all about repair and restoring your skin. It is best to follow appropriate regimen as per your age and skin type for best skin. Like forever, do not stop. Remember good skin happens by commitment, not magic. So, if you are not into it, start now!

What is the right age to start skin care regimen?

Skincare starts as early as our birth. Massage, moisturiser and baby products make for our first exposure to skin care. At times as we grow it gets lost, unless we experience skin concerns like acne, pigmentation, dull skin etc. The other times we truly care for our skin is around functions and special occasion. Commonly our ‘go to’ skin advisor is our salon therapist, social media, friend or family. Few seek advice from Dermatologist.

It is best to follow appropriate regimen as per your age and skin type for best skin. Like forever, do not stop. Remember good skin happens by commitment, not magic. So, if you are not into it, start now!
